About Ay, Santa Maria
The composer of Ay, Santa Maria is unknown, but this devotional Spanish song is a fine example of the villancico genre. The text is a fervent invocation to the Virgin Mary, imploring her intercession and expressing deep love and reliance. The singer calls her 'my hope' and a 'guiding star whose light leads us'. The piece is suitable for various combinations of male and female voices, offered here in SAB, SAT, TTB, and ATB arrangements, making it adaptable for choirs of different compositions.
