About Ave verum in E-flat major

Camille Saint-Saëns's Ave verum is a setting for SATB choir of the traditional Latin eucharistic text. The words, taken from the Liber Usualis, contemplate the true body of Jesus, born of the Virgin Mary, who suffered and was sacrificed on the cross for humankind. The composer draws out the devotional nature of the text, with the SATB voicing providing a rich yet clear harmonic language. The motet moves through the profound meditation on Christ’s sacrifice to a heartfelt plea for mercy, making it a fitting choice for sacred services. Its emotional depth and accessible writing make it a valuable addition to the choral repertoire.
