Ave verum III

Charles Gounod's Ave verum III is a sacred motet for SATB choir. Set in Latin, it takes its text from the traditional eucharistic hymn, the opening lines of which express devotion to the true body of Christ born of the Virgin Mary, who suffered and was immolated on the cross for humankind. The lyrics also recall the water and blood that flowed from Christ's pierced side, and entreat Jesus for mercy in the hour of death. Gounod’s setting is a heartfelt and devotional response to this profound text, suitable for liturgical use or concert performance.
