Torben Klaes's Ave verum Corpus is a setting for SATB choir of the traditional Latin eucharistic text. The words express profound devotion to the true body of Christ, born of the Virgin Mary, who suffered and was sacrificed for humanity. The text poetically recalls the blood and water that flowed from Christ's pierced side, and concludes with a plea for mercy and a prayer that this body may be a foretaste of salvation at the hour of death. This motet offers a beautiful opportunity to explore the rich devotional tradition of eucharistic music within a four-part choral texture.
