Ave rosa sine spinis by Ludwig Senfl — Lyrics
About Ave rosa sine spinis
Ludwig Senfl's Ave rosa sine spinis is a sacred motet for SATTB voices, sung in Latin. The text, a Marian antiphon, addresses Mary with rich imagery, calling her a rose without thorns, a star and light of the sea. It recounts her divine selection by the Father, her preservation from sin, and the unique grace bestowed upon her by the Holy Spirit, who made her a vessel of divine goodness. The motet also references the Annunciation, when the Word became flesh within her, and the angel's greeting, 'Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.' The music expresses profound devotion, exploring Mary's blessedness among women and her role as a conduit for eternal life. This is a significant work from the Renaissance tradition.
