Ave mundi spes by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina — Lyrics
About Ave mundi spes
This setting of a Marian text opens by hailing Mary as the hope of the world, gentle, pious, and full of grace. The composer then continues the sequence of praises, calling her the virgin, star of the sea, virgin pleasing to God, greeted by an angel, and lily of chastity. The music develops through further appellations: the virgin from whom the King of Heaven willed to be born and nourished, the lamp of virgins through whom light shone, the glory of angels, advocate of sinners, and gate of heaven. The work concludes by addressing her as Christ's holy mother, through whom God the Father may grant us eternal joys. This is a sacred motet for double SATB choir, sung in Latin.
