Ave Maria (non-standard text)

Sung during services of special devotion to the Virgin Mary, this is a four-part motet for ATTB voices by Maistre Jhan. The text, a non-standard setting of the Ave Maria, invokes Mary as advocate for sinners and comforter of the wretched, and asks her to pray for us. It continues with further praise and supplication, referring to her as the "flower of virgins" and "star of the sea", seeking protection for the faithful. The composer crafts a rich texture, with the voices often moving in imitative counterpoint, creating a devotional atmosphere befitting the sacred Latin text.
