About AVE MARIA
"Ave Maria" is a joyful and rhythmic Marian hymn that blends Igbo praise with the traditional Latin greeting. Composed by Johnpaul Chukwujekwu Okwusi, the piece opens with a warm choral tribute to the Mother of God ("Anyị n'ekele gị Maria"), honouring her as the one who bore Jesus for us.
The structure of the song makes it especially engaging for a choir. The score includes a performance note directing the alto, tenor, and bass parts to repeat the first verse's backing throughout, allowing the soprano line to take the lead on the subsequent verses. These solo lines highlight Mary’s titles, calling her a virgin worthy of praise ("Virgin dị ọtịto") and the mother of all the world ("Nne ụwa nile").
With its bright Allegretto tempo and repeating "Ave" refrain, this piece brings a lively energy to the choir loft. It is an excellent choice for May and October devotions, Marian feast days, or as a vibrant hymn of thanksgiving during Mass.
