About Ave Maria

When we look for a piece to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, the "Ave Maria" is always our foundation. This setting by C. D. Okorie takes that familiar Latin prayer and gives it a gentle, flowing life of its own. It is a wonderful choice for Marian feast days, the month of October, or as a reflective meditation piece during the Offertory or Communion.

What makes this arrangement special is the way it shares the prayer between the full choir and a solo voice. The choir opens with a warm, unified greeting to Mary, before a tenor soloist steps forward to sing "Dominus tecum" (The Lord is with thee). This back-and-forth creates a beautiful sense of a community praying together, with the soloist leading the reflection.

As the piece moves into the "Sancta Maria," the voices weave together in a more urgent plea for her intercession. The music swells and then settles into a peaceful, lingering "Amen." It is a rewarding piece to rehearse, asking the choir to listen closely to one another and balance their sound behind the soloist, bringing a deep sense of reverence to the Mass.
