About Ave Maria
The words of this setting are drawn from the traditional Ave Maria text, familiar from its use in the Roman Catholic liturgy. The opening phrases, 'Hail full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb', evoke the Annunciation and Visitation. Giovanni Battista Casali’s SATB motet is a setting of this sacred Latin text. It is presented here in its original staff notation for choir directors looking for a devotional piece within the sacred choral tradition.
