About Ave Maria
The familiar Latin text of the Ave Maria, a Marian antiphon, is given a rich and flowing setting by Robert Nathaniel Dett for SATB choir. The composer takes the opening words, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb," and shapes them into a devotional motet. Dett's harmonic language and melodic lines create a serene and contemplative atmosphere, ideal for sacred occasions.
