About Ave Maria

Philippe Verdelot's Ave Maria sets a passage from the Gospel of Luke, one of the most familiar texts in Christian devotion. The Latin words express the angel Gabriel's greeting to Mary, acknowledging her blessedness and the miraculous conception of Jesus. This setting is for a substantial choir of six voices (SSATTB), allowing for rich harmonic textures and intricate polyphony. As an antiphon, it would traditionally be sung between psalms or lessons, offering a moment of contemplation and praise. Verdelot, a composer of the High Renaissance, crafts a devotional work that highlights the sacred text through carefully woven vocal lines.
