Ave Maria by Nicolle des Celliers de Hesdin — Lyrics
About Ave Maria
Nicolle des Celliers de Hesdin was a composer of sacred music in the Renaissance. This Ave Maria is a motet for four-part women's voices (SSAA), sung in Latin. The text, a prayer to the Virgin Mary, begins with the Angelic Salutation: 'Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.' The composer crafts an intimate setting for this familiar devotional text, drawing on the rich harmonic language of the period to create a devotional atmosphere suited for liturgical use or thoughtful contemplation. The clear SSAA voicing allows for a warm and resonant sound, ideal for conveying the tenderness and reverence of the message.
