About Autumn Song

Arnold Johann Gantvoort’s Autumn Song is a four-part setting for SATB choir of an English text. It is a secular part-song, evoking the imagery of the harvest season. The lyrics paint a picture of the changing seasons, from the dying warmth of summer to the cool breezes of autumn, and the abundant yield of the harvest. It describes the fields turning yellow, the fruit gleaming, and the joy of the season, with lads and maidens singing and rejoicing. The song concludes with a vision of a moonlit night filled with the sounds of tabors and the light bounding of fairy feet, suggesting a festive atmosphere accompanying the fruitful harvest.
