About Aus tiefer Not (d Phrygian)
Hans Leo Hassler's setting of Aus tiefer Not is a powerful sacred motet for SATB choir. The German text is a plea for mercy, drawing on Psalm 130, beginning "From the depths I cry to you, Lord God". The choir is asked to consider the deep sense of sin and wrongdoing expressed in the words, and the composer responds with music that reflects this penitential mood. The composer's skill in weaving together the voices clearly conveys the anguish of the text, and the hope for divine forgiveness and grace. This motet explores the contrast between human failing and God's boundless mercy.
