Ludwig van Beethoven's setting of Goethe's poem Es war einmal ein König is a standalone secular Lied for solo bass. This characterful song, drawn from Goethe's Faust, tells the humorous, slightly satirical tale of a king and his unusually prominent flea. The poem's narrative follows the flea's rise from pet to minister, complete with fine clothes and a grand star, and the subsequent elevation of its siblings. The contrast between the flea's elevated status and the suffering of the court ('gestochen und genagt' - stung and gnawed) provides a darkly comic underscoring to the unfolding events.
