Augellin by Claudio Monteverdi — Lyrics
About Augellin
This expressive madrigal by Claudio Monteverdi paints a vivid scene: the singer implores a little bird to carry a message of torment and longing to his lady. The text asks the bird to spread its wings and fly to his beloved, his 'sun', and with sorrowful accents, to tell her of his suffering. The words question whether she will always allow the one who adores her to be dissolved in tears. Monteverdi sets this poignant plea for male voices in a TTB arrangement, capturing the delicate and heartfelt nature of the secular Renaissance poetry with his characteristic harmonic and melodic invention.
