On the theme of saying farewell, Nikolaus Betscher’s setting of Auf gute Nacht conjures up a scene of late-night camaraderie and the imminent call to bed. The German text speaks of the time already spent, and the 'night patrol' urging everyone to retire with their wine to their sleeping quarters. The composer’s SAB voicing allows for a rich, yet clear, harmonic texture, ideal for capturing the convivial yet resigned mood of the words.
