Audi Israel by Richard Allison — Lyrics

Attend my people and give eare, of ferly things I will thee tell, see that my words in minde thou beare, and to my preceps listen well. I am thy souveraine Lord thy God, which have the brought from carefull thral, and eke reclaimed from Pharaos rod. Make thee no Gods on them to call. Nor fashioned forme of my thing, in heaven or earth to worship it: or I thy God by revenging with grevous plagues this sia will smite. Take not in vaine his holy name, abuse it not after thy will: for so thou mightst soon purchase blame and in his wrath hee would thee spull.

About Audi Israel

This setting of the Ten Commandments, known as Audi Israel, would be particularly fitting for services during Lent or as part of a Reformation Day celebration. Richard Allison sets the English text of this foundational statement of Jewish and Christian belief for SATB choir. The music underscores the solemnity of the divine pronouncements, with the choir delivering God’s words of instruction, covenant, and warning with conviction. The composer draws the singers into the direct address of the text, urging careful listening and adherence to the precepts laid down by the Lord, reminding the people of their deliverance and the sacredness of God's name and day of rest.
