About Auburn
John Liptrot Hatton was a prolific Victorian composer of popular songs and part-songs. Auburn is a secular SATB setting of an English text that laments the destruction of a beautiful and idyllic village. The words contrast the pastoral charm and happiness of the past with the present desolation caused by a "spoiler's hand".
