Atul'egwu by Ikoli Harcourt Whyte — Lyrics
About Atul'egwu
"Atul'egwu" is a deeply comforting Igbo hymn of assurance, reminding the faithful that no matter the trials they face, God remains their steadfast guide. The title translates to a gentle but firm command: "Do not fear." Through its verses, the song lists the many storms of life—the winds of hardship, the noise of war, famine, the attacks of the enemy, and even the betrayal of friends. Yet, after every line of trouble, it answers with the same unwavering resolve: "m'atụl'egwu" (I will not fear), because the God who leads us is a mighty warrior (Dike).
Composed by Ikoli Harcourt Whyte, the piece carries the distinct, rhythmic, and harmonically rich style that makes his music so beloved in choir lofts across Nigeria. The chorus turns outward, directly addressing every member of the congregation—men, women, and children—urging them not to be afraid. It is a powerful choice for moments of encouragement, often sung as a recessional hymn or during times of communal trial, leaving the church with a renewed sense of courage and trust in divine protection.
