About Astolfo per pietà
Jacquet de Berchem was a composer of the late Renaissance, known for his Italian madrigals. This example, Astolfo per pietà, is written for SATB voices and exemplifies the secular polyphonic style of the period. The text, taken from Canto XXXIX of Ariosto's epic poem Orlando Furioso, describes Astolfo's emotional reaction upon seeing his companion, the Count, in a state of distress.
