About Asperges me
John Wiegand's Asperges me is a setting of the traditional Latin text for the rite of aspersion, commonly used at the beginning of Mass. The words, drawn from Psalm 50, are a plea for purification and mercy: 'Sprinkle me, Lord, with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Have mercy on me, O God, according to your great mercy.' The setting for SATB choir draws the listener into the penitential atmosphere with its earnest plea, culminating in the familiar doxology.
