Ask me no more by Arthur Cleveland Wigan — Lyrics

Ask me no more where Jove bestows, When June is past, the fading rose; For in your beauty’s orient deep, These flowers, as in their causes, sleep.

About Ask me no more

Arthur Cleveland Wigan's Ask me no more is a secular SATB setting of English poetry, in the tradition of the Renaissance madrigal. The text draws a parallel between natural phenomena and the beloved's beauty. Just as fading roses can be found in their origins and the mythical Phoenix builds its nest, so too does the speaker find these elements dormant within the profound beauty of their beloved. The poem suggests that the beloved's charms are so potent that they contain the essence of all beauty, negating the need to look elsewhere for it.
