ASHES ON MY HEAD by Asong F. Zisuh — Lyrics
About ASHES ON MY HEAD
"Ashes On My Head" is a straightforward, reflective piece designed specifically for Ash Wednesday. As the congregation comes forward to receive the ashes, this song sets a mood of genuine repentance. The chorus is brief and direct, capturing the physical act of the liturgy—receiving ashes as a visible sign of sorrow for our sins.
The verses walk the choir and congregation through the familiar biblical parable of the Pharisee and the Publican. Instead of abstract concepts, the lyrics tell a simple story of two men praying. We hear the pride of the Pharisee contrasting sharply with the downcast eyes and humble plea of the tax collector, who simply asks God for mercy.
The steady, moderato tempo allows the words to be heard clearly, making it an excellent teaching hymn as well as a prayer. By the time the final verse asks who went home more friendly with God, the singers and the assembly are reminded of the exact posture of heart required as we begin the Lenten season.
