Ascendo ad Patrem meum by Jacob Handl — Lyrics
About Ascendo ad Patrem meum
Jacob Handl was a Slovenian composer of the late Renaissance. This motet, Ascendo ad Patrem meum, is written for SSATBB choir and sets a Latin text drawn from the scriptures. The opening lines, 'Ascendo ad Patrem meum et Patrem vestrum, Deum meum et Deum vestrum. Alleluia,' speak of the Ascension of Christ to the Father. The motet includes additional scriptural verses, reflecting on the sending of the Holy Spirit and the joy this brings. The final section, unique to Handl's setting, describes the Ascension itself: 'Elevatis manibus benedixit eis et ferebatur in coelum. Alleluia.' This is a rich and devotional setting suitable for services or concerts.
