About Ascendente Iesu
Giaches de Wert paints a vivid scene of Christ calming the tempest. The motet opens as Jesus ascends into a boat, followed by his disciples. Suddenly, a great storm arises, threatening to engulf the vessel. While Jesus sleeps, his disciples, in fear, awaken him crying, 'Lord, save us, we perish.' He rebukes their lack of faith, then rises to command the winds and sea, bringing about a great calm. This SAATTB setting masterfully captures the drama of the Gospel narrative through rich vocal textures and expressive harmonic language, fitting for a sacred choral work of the Renaissance.
