Ascendens Christus in altum

Ascendens Christus in altum paints a vivid scene of Christ's ascension, a moment of triumph as He leads captivity captive and bestows gifts upon mankind, heralded by Alleluias. This sacred motet by Claudio Merulo is set for SATTB choir, offering a rich, five-part texture. The Latin text, drawn from scripture, expresses the exultation and divine generosity associated with this pivotal event in Christian theology. Merulo's setting would have been crafted for liturgical use, an example of the grand motet tradition of the late Renaissance or early Baroque.
