AS THE DEER by MARTIN NYSTROM, Arr. Tom Fettke — Lyrics

As the deer panteth for the water, So my soul longeth after Thee. You alone are my heart's desire, And I long to worship Thee. You alone are my strength and shield; To You alone, may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart's desire, And I long to worship Thee.

About AS THE DEER

"As the Deer" brings a profound sense of stillness to the church the moment the choir begins to sing. Based on the opening verses of Psalm 42, the melody captures that deep, spiritual thirst for God's presence. It is a gentle, tender piece that invites both the singers and the congregation to pause and center their hearts entirely on worship.

In our parishes, this arrangement by Tom Fettke is a beloved choice for Communion or during moments of Eucharistic Adoration. The flowing harmony parts allow the choir to build a warm, supportive sound, especially when the voices divide and swell on the lines "You alone are my strength and shield." It gives the congregation something beautiful to anchor their prayers to as they return to their pews.

What makes this piece so moving is the intimacy of its lyrics. Moving from the imagery of a thirsting deer to the personal declaration of "You're my Friend and You are my Brother," it reminds us of the closeness we share with Christ. It is a humble, honest prayer that never fails to bring a quiet reverence to the Mass.
