Luca Marenzio's Arsi gran tempo is a secular Italian madrigal for SAATTB voices. The text expresses a passionate internal struggle, moving from a state of being consumed by earthly beauty and earthly desire to a realization of how that desire led him astray. The poet laments that his mind was unjustly bound by torment and falsehood, but now, freed from earthly burdens, he hopes his tongue will lead his beloved into a deep oblivion. Marenzio's setting captures the dramatic shifts in the text, moving from intense suffering to a plea for release.
