Arnheim by Samuel Holyoke — Lyrics

Huic David, quando terra ejus restituta est. Dominus regnavit: exsultet terra; laetentur insulae multae. Nubes et caligo in circuitu ejus; justitia et judicium correctio sedis ejus. Ignis ante ipsum praecedet, et inflammabit in circuitu inimicos ejus. Illuxerunt fulgura ejus orbi terrae; vidit, et commota est terra. Montes sicut cera fluxerunt a facie Domini; a facie Domini omnis terra.

About Arnheim

Samuel Holyoke's Arnheim is a SATB setting of a Latin text, with an English translation provided. The music opens with the forces of nature responding to the majesty of God. The text, drawn from the Psalms, depicts God's reign and power, with imagery of storms, fire, and lightning. It calls for celebration from the earth and distant islands, and a jubilant response from Zion and the daughters of Judah. The music builds in intensity as it describes God's righteous judgment and glory, culminating in a powerful affirmation of his dominion over all.
