About Ardo
Bartolomeo Spighi da Prato was a composer active during the Renaissance. Ardo is a secular Italian madrigal for solo bass voice. The text explores the intense, hidden passion of a lover, comparing his internal suffering to the mythic figure of Typhon buried under a mountain. Despite his vow of silence, his sighs are sparks from the hidden fire, and his unspoken love is revealed in his gaze. Even as his heart burns in a blind ardor, the hidden flame within his soul shines through his eyes, much like a house ablaze within will reveal its heat through its high windows.
