CATHOLIC ARCHDIOCESE OF LAGOS (ANTHEM) by Echie, Isreal Uchenna — Lyrics
About CATHOLIC ARCHDIOCESE OF LAGOS (ANTHEM)
When a diocese gathers for major celebrations—chrism Masses, ordinations, or feast days—there is a special power in singing an anthem that belongs entirely to that local church. The "Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos (Anthem)" does exactly this, giving a unified voice to the clergy, religious, and laity of the coastal city. Composed by Isreal Uchenna Echie, it is a proud, majestic piece that captures the identity of a vibrant, diverse Catholic community.
The verses paint a picture of the Lagos church: a family drawn from all nations, rooted in the "coastal warmth" of the city, and bound together by faith, hope, and charity. It places the cross at the center of the Christian journey, framing it as a symbol of victory and the guiding light from "the cross to the crown."
Musically, the anthem builds to a sweeping, prayerful refrain. The choir leads the congregation in a direct petition for the Archbishop, the priests, the religious, and the lay faithful, before turning to Mary with the Latin invocation, "Mater Ecclesiae, pray for us." It is a beautiful expression of local church unity, perfect for grand diocesan events where the whole family of God comes together in worship.
