Apparuerunt apostolis

Jacob Regnart was a prolific composer of sacred and secular music in the late 16th century. This motet, Apparuerunt apostolis, is a setting of a Latin text describing the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, as recounted in the Acts of the Apostles. The text focuses on the miraculous event where the apostles began to speak in different tongues, moved by the Spirit. Regnart’s setting for SAATB voices captures the dramatic unfolding of this Pentecostal moment. The recurring Alleluja sections provide moments of jubilant affirmation, underscoring the divine inspiration described in the main text.
