The voices are often treated independently, yet weave together in intricate counterpoint, creating a complex and dramatic sound world. The text, expressive and passionate, speaks of a love that has taken over reason, leading the singer inexorably towards death, a common theme in the secular part-music of the Renaissance. Merulo's setting captures the emotional intensity of the words, with moments of both turbulent energy and poignant reflection.
