Animam meam dilectam by Annibale Zoilo — Lyrics
About Animam meam dilectam
Annibale Zoilo's Animam meam dilectam is a powerful SATB motet for mixed voices in Latin. The music opens with a plaintive opening melody, soon joined by the other voices in expressive counterpoint. The composer's setting vividly portrays the lamentations of the text, which speaks of betrayal and abandonment. The solo voice's plea, 'Animam meam dilectam tradidi in manus iniquorum' (I have delivered my beloved soul into the hands of the wicked), is answered by the full choir, creating a dramatic dialogue. The subsequent lines, describing the enemy's malice and the desolation of being forgotten, are treated with musical intensity, reflecting the sorrow and despair of the psalmist. This motet is a poignant example of sacred Renaissance part-music, particularly suited to the Tenebrae services.
