Angst, Pein und Schmertzen unverschuldt

Leonhard Lechner’s secular German madrigal Angst, Pein und Schmertzen unverschuldt is written for SAAT voices. The text expresses the suffering and pain of unmerited hardship. The singer laments his unceasing woes, the bitterness of separation from his beloved, and his sleepless nights. He finds solace, however, in the hope that God's grace will allow him to find comfort and joy from his loved one before his death. Lechner’s setting captures the emotional turmoil of the text with skilful part-writing, characteristic of the secular Renaissance madrigal tradition.
