Angelus Domini descendit

William Byrd was one of the greatest composers of the English Renaissance. His output of sacred music, written during a time of religious upheaval, includes many motets for Latin texts. This work, Angelus Domini descendit, is set for three voices (Alto, Tenor, Bass). The Latin text describes the Annunciation, with the angel of the Lord descending from heaven and speaking to the women, announcing Christ's resurrection with 'Alleluja'. The music reflects the solemnity and joy of the Easter message, characteristic of Byrd's profound understanding of text setting and vocal polyphony.
