About Angelus ad pastores ait

This motet by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck is ideal for Christmas services. The Latin text announces the angel's joyful tidings to the shepherds: 'The Angel of the Lord said to the shepherds: I announce to you a great joy, for today a Saviour of the world is born to you.' The music then proclaims the birth of the child: 'A little son is born to us today, and he will be called God the Mighty.' The SSATB voicing allows for rich, polyphonic textures, bringing the sacred message to life with a celebratory Alleluia that underscores the wonder of the Nativity. Sweelinck's masterful setting captures both the solemnity and the exultation of this pivotal moment in the Christian calendar.
