And them no more by Joseph Joachim Raff — Lyrics
About And them no more
The transient nature of earthly beauty and joy is explored in this SATB partsong. Its German text, here presented with an English translation, uses the fading beauty of a rose and the fleeting song of a nightingale to reflect on the impermanence of love and happiness. Even the deepest sorrow is ultimately temporary, as the composer suggests the winds that tear through the hedges will eventually cease. Raff sets this poignant text with rich harmonies, creating a moving reflection on the cyclical nature of life, loss, and eventual peace.
