About And is it night

Robert Jones was a prolific composer of English lute songs in the early Baroque period. This four-part setting, And is it night, is a fine example of his secular vocal writing. The text, a passionate address from lover to beloved, explores themes of desire, jealousy, and the eventual triumph of love. Jones sets the words with a sensitive musicality, capturing the intimacy and ardour of the poem. The SATB voicing allows for rich harmonic textures, while the clear English text makes the emotional narrative immediately accessible. This piece would be an excellent addition to a programme of English madrigals or early part-songs.
