Amour lascif

Pierre Certon's Amour lascif paints a vivid scene where fickle love cannot be sustained by poverty. The text poetically explains that poverty and love are fundamentally incompatible, and that any attempt to force them together would be unnatural. This French secular chanson for ATTB voices captures the Renaissance spirit of witty, often amorous, word-painting. The composer’s setting highlights the text’s playful yet pointed message, making it an engaging choice for choirs looking to explore the chansons of the period. Its clear harmonic language and delightful vocal interplay make it a rewarding piece for both singers and listeners.
