This charming canzonetta depicts a lover bewailing the power of his beloved's eyes, which wound him with their darts. He laments that she does not understand the effect she has, nor the pain she inflicts, even as she herself seems unaware of love's pangs. The text portrays a tender scene of yearning, where the lover's heart languishes and his mind seeks solace in his suffering. He describes how his beloved's gaze ignites his breast and dispels the darkness that offends his soul, finding a serene warmth within. This Italian piece for three voices, AAT, beautifully captures the sweetness and bittersweet nature of unrequited affection.
