About Amor deh che non togli
Ascanio Mayone's Amor deh che non togli is a secular Italian madrigal for SATTB voices. The text, by Giovanbattista Marino, laments the lover's grief, questioning why Love does not remove the blindfold from his eyes, so that his tears might flow more freely. The poet asks if Love hesitates to remove the blindfold because he cannot bear to see the light of the beloved's eyes extinguished. Yet, even extinguished, their rays remain as clear and ardent as before. Mayone's setting captures the pathos and rhetorical questioning of Marino's lines, characteristic of the madrigal tradition.
