Amor con fortuna by Juan del Encina — Lyrics
Amor con fortuna
me muestra enemiga.
No sé qué me diga.
No se lo que quiero,
pues busque mi daño,
Yo mesmo m'engaño,
me seto do muero.
Y, muerto, no spero
salir de fatiga,
No se que me diga.
Amor me persigue
con muy cruda guerra

About Amor con fortuna
Juan del Encina’s Amor con fortuna is a secular Spanish villancico for SATB. The music opens with a plaintive melody, soon joined by the other voices to create a rich texture. The composer sets a text expressing a deep sense of personal turmoil, where love and fortune are depicted as cruel and inescapable forces. The singer laments a state of confusion and suffering, feeling trapped by a fate that offers no relief and a love that brings only pain. The polyphonic writing throughout the piece vividly captures the emotional distress of the words, making it a compelling example of Renaissance secular part-music.
