Amor che fai che pensi

Leone Leoni's Amor che fai che pensi is a delightful example of secular Italian madrigal writing for SSATB. The music opens with a sense of gentle inquiry, the voices weaving together in imitative textures that quickly give way to more homophonic passages. The text, a reflection on love and its deceptive power, is treated with sensitivity and skill. The composer expertly depicts the lover's dawning realization that Cupid uses the beloved's eyes as his weapons, a sentiment that the composer captures through vivid musical phrasing and a dynamic interplay between the vocal lines. The rich five-part scoring allows for a full and expressive sound, ideal for a skilled choir.
