AMI NYEKOM OBONG by Bon. S. A. Inyang — Lyrics
About AMI NYEKOM OBONG
This handwritten score gives us a wonderful glimpse into the practical life of a Nigerian choir, combining two distinct pieces onto a single sheet to carry the congregation through different moments of the Mass. The top half features "Ami Nyekom Obong," a lively Efik/Ibibio Offertory song composed by Bon. S. A. Inyang. Its title translates to a personal declaration of thanksgiving to God, making it a perfect fit for the procession of gifts. The verses build up to a vibrant chorus that invites everyone to shout "Alleluia" and praise Jesus for His immense love.
On the bottom half, the mood shifts to a solemn, English setting of the "Lamb of God." Written in four-part harmony, this Agnus Dei provides a gentle and pleading contrast for the communion rite. The choir repeats the heartfelt request for mercy, creating a space of reverence as the priest breaks the bread.
Having both an energetic indigenous Offertory and a reverent English Mass part on one page is a familiar sight in our choir lofts. It shows how worship leaders balance joyful cultural expression with the universal prayers of the liturgy, guiding the people seamlessly from thanksgiving to quiet adoration.
