Maistre Jhan’s Altro non è il mio amor is a secular Italian madrigal for SATTB choir. The text paints a vivid picture of love as a personal hell, a torment experienced even before death. The poet describes this inferno as being deprived of the sight of God in heaven, a pain more profound than eternal fire. This intense suffering is seen as a consequence of love’s overwhelming power, which can inflict hellish torments upon the lover even while still alive. The madrigal explores the paradox of finding hell within the very passion that yearns for divine solace.
