Altri canti di Marte

Claudio Monteverdi’s Altri canti di Marte is a powerful example of the secular Italian madrigal. Set for SSATTB voices, it contrasts martial imagery with the poet's personal experience of love's battles. The opening lines invoke Mars and his warriors, detailing assaults, victorious battles, and the fierce triumph of death. The text then shifts dramatically, with the poet declaring that he sings of 'Amor', and the wounds inflicted by a warrior woman. He describes how a single glance conquered him, and how his soul wept bitter tears, recounting a 'miserable but true' history. The final lines directly address Cupid, asking that the same force which granted victory to his beloved may now grant life to the poet’s song, even as it brought death to his heart.
