About Almighty and merciful God
John Goss’s Almighty and merciful God opens with a broad, homophonic statement that immediately establishes the solemnity of the text. The SATB choir declaims the supplication with rich, full harmony, building to moments of powerful expression. The music directly reflects the plea for faithful service and the aspiration to attain heavenly promises, its earnest character underscoring the devotional nature of the text. This is a stirring anthem for mixed voice choir, its English text drawn from a prayer for service and perseverance. The vocal writing is idiomatic and rewarding, offering directors a substantial and moving addition to the sacred choral repertoire.
